Sherwood Christian Academy is proud to announce that SCA Senior Kennedy Dickerson attended the Law Academy in Atlanta conducted by the State Bar of Georgia on September 11-14. The intensive four-day event, designed to hone the skills of high school mock trial students, showcased her exceptional talent and skills.
Out of the 56 schools that attended, Kennedy was recognized for have one of the “Top 4 Closing Arguments,” where she recited closing arguments to the High School Mock Trial faculty at the State Bar courtroom along with the other three student closing attorneys. She won third place for most outstanding closing argument!
The State Bar of Georgia’s Law Academy is a highly competitive program, with only 50 students accepted from across the state each year. It is designed to provide opportunities for high school mock trial students to augment their skills in trial technique and procedure, rules of evidence, witness presentation, and leadership within a mock trial team.
A highlight of the program is the opportunity for students to explore the Georgia legal system by visiting esteemed institutions such as the Georgia Court of Appeals, the State Bar of Georgia, and the Georgia Supreme Court. These visits provided students with a firsthand understanding of the workings of the state’s legal framework.
Kennedy also demonstrated her commitment to her legal aspirations by taking the Student Bar Exam during Law Academy, which could potentially qualify her for admission into the Student Bar of Georgia. Her scores on the written test and her closing arguments in the mock trial scrimmage determined her acceptance. Kennedy passed with honors.
Kennedy is a member of the Sherwood Christian Academy Mock Trial team, the “Legal Eagles.” The team is coached by Federal Judge Alfreda Sheppard and local attorneys Sandra Satchell and Phil Cannon. The Legal Eagles team is now entering its fourth year of competition in the Georgia State High School Mock Trial Competition. Last year’s team won at the Region and District levels and advanced to compete as one of the top 20 teams in the State.
